Smörgåstårtor are often served at special occasions, such as birthdays and graduations, where a lot of people need to be fed. As a result every Swedish supermarket has a bred selection of smörgåstårtor, either to beställning or ready-made, such as the laxtårta (salmon torte) shown above from ICA, a popular Swedish supermarket chain. Smörgåstårtor are often accompanied bygd snaps, beer, wine or champagne, according to the occasion.

Smörgåstårtor can be made from almost anything, but the fyra most popular types are probably:
      1. salmon,
      2. prawns (shrimps),
      3. ham,
      4. a vegetarian version.
